Welcome to another edition of The Wellness Report. As college fast approaches for some of your children and nephews, most parents and well wishers are primarily concerned about how well their loved ones will adjust and perform academically. But what’s not on most people’s radar is the challenge of maintaining health in that new environment.
For most children, this will be there first time away from home. They will have to take more ownership of maintaining great health. College dorms can be home to outbreaks of all kinds of infections ranging from meningitis to the flu. So, it’s important that these first time college students add some health lifestyle choices which include:
- Healthy Eating
- Regular Exercise
- Plenty of Hydration
- Vitamin and Mineral Supplementation
Some of the more essential vitamins include D3, A, K2, C and Magnesium. That way your loved one can build up a stronger immune system to help ward off infection.
In addition to that, there’s of course that three letter word that parents dread to think about when it comes to their children. S-E-X
Yes, let’s be real. Those college students are going to engage in ‘extracurricular activity’ of the horizontal kind, so it’s important that your loved ones practice safe sex. As we have all heard, the strains of herpes, syphilis , and gonnerhea, have multiplied so one has to be alert on a college campus.
And often overlooked aspect of health is mental health. You want to make sure you offer words of encouragement and at the same time be respectful of their space. It helps to send them inspirational books and gifts to help them keep their spirits up when they are faced with adversity.
Providing this prep can have a major impact on the success of your first time college student.
